ULI has offered its popular UrbanPlan program in local universities and high schools for several years; now we are taking the show on the road! A new, condensed form of the UrbanPlan program has been developed specifically for elected and appointed municipal officials: city council members, planning commissioners, zoning board members and other stakeholders whose decisions affect land use and development. Senior staff members are also encouraged to participate. Assisted by trained ULI volunteers, local officials can complete in this lively, hands-on educational program in a single day.
Using a hypothetical neighborhood site as the workshop focus, participants assume unique roles and work in teams to create a redevelopment plan. In the course of the program, they broaden their knowledge in the following areas:
- the economics and community benefits of different building forms and uses;
- the basics of consensus building and funding of a complex project;
- the different time horizons for the public and private sectors;
- the risks associated with lengthy negotiations among all parties; and
- the importance of a clear and open process in the selection of a private partner.
‘It was the most beneficial program at ULI’s 2016 Fall Meeting. It actually gave me knowledge that I could take away and use in my work. UrbanPlan for Public Officials puts you in a scenario and raises the same big questions we have at stake in San Antonio right now. With the HUD Choice Grant that San Antonio was awarded, I wish I had been a part of UrbanPlan earlier to teach me about how to start thinking about revitalizing a neighborhood. The program addresses all of the site planning knowledge and financing skills needed in real world developments.’ — Timothy Alcott, Development Services and Neighborhood Revitalization Officer and Interim Legal Officer, San Antonio Housing Authority, October 2016
We will begin offering this program in the early summer of 2017, and are accepting municipal invitations now so that busy public officials can clear their schedules for a day. For more information on UrbanPlan for Public Officials, please contact any of the following:
